Analysis of AI Coding Tools' Impact on Junior vs. Senior Engineers: Who Benefits More and Who Faces Elimination Pressure

A 2026 joint study by Stanford and MIT shows that AI coding tools boost junior engineers' productivity the most (+55%), while senior engineers see a smaller increase (+15%). However, senior engineers can handle more complex architectural issues with AI assistance. The study also found that engineers who rely solely on AI tools without deep understanding experience significant efficiency drops when encountering complex bugs that AI cannot solve. It recommends that companies strengthen basic skills training while promoting AI coding tools.
