ByteDance AI Business Financial Data Revealed: Doubao Daily Revenue Below 1 Million Yuan, Seedance ARR Reaches $2 Billion

According to multiple media reports, ByteDance's AI business financial data has recently been disclosed. As of the first half of 2026, its Doubao app has over 200 million daily active users but generates less than 1 million yuan in daily revenue, mainly from e-commerce commissions. In contrast, the video generation model Seedance has an annualized recurring revenue (ARR) of $2 billion (approximately 14.3 billion yuan), with a gross margin of about 70% and monthly revenue exceeding 1 billion yuan, nearly offsetting Doubao's computing costs.

Doubao: High User Base, Low Revenue Dilemma

Doubao continues the mobile internet free strategy, with over 200 million DAU but daily revenue under 1 million yuan, primarily from e-commerce commissions. Its daily computing costs reach tens of millions of yuan, with multimodal features (e.g., image recognition, voice chat) being even more expensive. Estimates show Doubao's total daily user time is less than 1/8 of Bilibili's, yet its operating costs exceed Bilibili's. ByteDance plans to increase capital expenditure by over 200 billion yuan in 2026, mainly for computing center construction.

Seedance: High-Margin Enterprise Service Benchmark

Seedance 2.0 adopts a MoE architecture with 200 billion parameters. Launched in February 2026, it became the world's most powerful video model. Its gross margin reaches 70%, mainly due to video models' lower requirements for inference chips (can use domestic chips) and a lean team (core algorithm members only about ten people). Revenue primarily comes from enterprise clients, with top comic studios spending about 50,000 yuan per project. However, revenue growth has slowed.

Strategic Shift: From Consumer to Enterprise Services

Inspired by Anthropic's Claude Code success (ARR of $1 billion in six months), ByteDance has adjusted AI resource allocation, shifting focus from mass products like Doubao to enterprise services. Volcengine MaaS business has been elevated to a higher priority, targeting a 10x revenue increase and accelerated overseas expansion. Meanwhile, ByteDance has spun off its AI drug discovery business into a new company, Anew Labs, valued at over $1 billion, with an initial funding round of nearly $200 million, led by former AI drug discovery head Liu Kai, based in Shanghai.

Industry Impact and Challenges

Seedance demonstrates the high-margin potential of AI video generation but needs to expand beyond short dramas. Doubao's user scale is hard to monetize, and domestic free models (e.g., DeepSeek) further compress subscription space. ByteDance's AI business divergence shows that enterprise services may achieve profitability earlier than consumer markets, but computing costs, chip supply, and model iteration remain long-term challenges.
