Mozilla's llamafile Makes Running LLMs Locally as Easy as Running an App

Mozilla released llamafile 1.0, enabling anyone to run large language models locally with a single file download—no Python environment, no dependencies, no GPU required. A llamafile bundles a model and runtime into a self-contained executable. Users double-click (or run from terminal) to launch a local LLM with a web interface. Llama 3.1 8B runs at 15-30 tokens/second on modern MacBooks. The project has been downloaded 2M+ times since launch. Key use cases: private AI assistant (data never leaves device), offline usage, edge deployment, learning AI without cloud accounts.
